Siwa Geography

The oasis is in a deep depression that reaches −19 metres (−62 ft) below sea level.

To the west, the al Jaghbub Oasis rests in a similar depression and to the east, the large Qattara Depression is also below sea level. The depression is fertile due to both natural flowing artesian wells and irrigation. It is the site of about 200 natural springs.

Siwa is directly adjacent to the Libyan Desert plateau. The geology is characterised by horizontal layers of porous limestones alternated with marls and clays dating back to the Miocene.

The limestone plateau and inselbergs resulting from the oasis' erosion along the dunes create reliefs that the Isiwan describe as mountains (adrar in Tamizight).

Two large salt lakes are fed by drainage water of agricultural origin. The oasis supports the cultivation of thousands of date palms and olives.

Siwa has a temperate desert climate.

Desert Safaris

The Great Sand Sea surrounding Siwa is a haven for Safari lovers. Adrar Ahkek works with local 4×4 Safari guides, to organize superb excursions in the desert, for a full-day, an overnight dinner, or a sunset spin. Prepare yourself to swim in salt lakes, fresh basins and sulfuric hot springs. Enjoy the exciting experience of sand-boarding during the trip, down the steepest dunes for extreme riders or milder ones for the amateurs.

The Great Sea of Sand is furthermore a haven of testimonies from ancient natural phenomena and marine life existence in Siwa, over thousands of years ago: petrified forests, meteorites, fossilized sea- shells, whale spines ...and more! Moving dunes and spectacular desert treks lend themselves to the most exciting and dare-devilish rides in the whole of Egypt. The local 4×4 drivers are singular examples of cinema stunt drivers.

Have an unforgettable meal in the desert or barbecue your favourite kind of meat. If you are a true desert lover, you can choose to camp overnight and enjoy the wonderful moonlight and pristine serenity of the desert by night. During the full-day tour day you will see:

Cultural Tours

Star-Gazing

The sky in Siwa, particularly in the beginning of the lunar cycle, is so clear that it offers star-gazers a unique opportunity to examine, recognize and locate the various planets, stars and constellations with a great deal of ease. Truly, the sky is nowhere as clear as in Adrar Ahkek!

Temple of Amoun

The Temple of Amoun/Zeus/Jupter (Temple of The Oracle) in Aghurmi was built during the 26th Dynasty. There is a mystery about this temple which is paired with all the great legends told about Siwa. The most famous one is Alexander The Great`s journey to Siwa and the Temple, where he was baptized Son of Amoun (Zeus in Greece), Defender of the cult of Amoun (long assaulted by the Persian conquerors) and Protector of Egypt.

Fatnas Spring is situated near the city of Siwa in Fantasy Island. It is another famous spring like that of Cleaopatra but more pleasant and secluded. Fatnas lies on the opposite side of Adrar Ahkek and represents its sunshine horizon line. In the late afternoon it is here that you can enjoy watching the sun setting.
